Diaper Bag Essentials

Updated: Jul 21

Babies are unpredictable. Whether you’re at a doctor’s appointment or visiting friends/family, anything can go down. My diaper bag essentials are quite extensive, but you’ll have everything you need in case a situation occurs. Here’s a quick guide on what you should always have packed in your diaper bag.

*Note: some items may not be necessary until baby is within 6 months of age

Diapers

You can never have enough diapers in your bag. At minimum, you should have 6-8 diapers in your diaper bag. Let me tell you how fast your diaper count can disappear. Your baby has a blowout, you clean baby and you are putting on the new diaper, baby was not finished, now you are on diaper number two—which was a complete waste because you JUST put the diaper on.

Wipes

I usually carry a standard size pack of wipes along with a pack of travel size wipes. The travel size wipes are easier to store in your portable diaper changing station.

*Huggies On-The-Go Cleansing Wipes

The Huggies On-The-Go Cleansing Wipes are great, because babies touch everything and their hands are always in their mouths. It is a hypoallergenic wipe that kills 99% of germs.

Clothes

Two extra pairs of clothing in your diaper bag is ideal. Be sure to switch out the clothes regularly to avoid having two small or out of season clothes.

Skip-Hop Portable Changing Pad

The Skip-Hop changing pad is ESSENTIAL! Keep at least two diapers and your travel size wipes in the designated pocket areas. I try to avoid public restrooms at all costs, and this changing pad allows me to do just that.

Skip Hop Waterproof Wet/Dry Bag

Just get rid of the plastic shopping bag. The Skip-Hop waterproof wet/dry bag is much more reliable and stylish.

*OXO Tot On-The-Go Feeding Spoon

I love the OXO Tot spoon, because it has a carrying case, it is made of soft silicone, and the spoon is shallow, which is designed to prevent over feeding. If you’re making your own baby food, I would suggest the baby bullet storage containers.

*Itzy Ritzy Teething Mitt

I found that the Itzy Ritzy teething mitt worked well for us, because it kept EJ’s actual hand out of his mouth, but still allowed him to soothe his gums.

Nursing Cover

If you plan to breastfeed, the Itzy Ritzy nursing cover is great when nursing baby, but it can also be used as a car seat or shopping cart cover.

Bottles

I personally do not carry bottles in the diaper bag, because I latch baby on to the breast. However, Kiinde twist bottles can be used for formula or breastmilk.

Burp Clothes/Bibs

If your baby is eating solids, purchase a *silicone bib. It’s easier to clean and provides more coverage. In the first few months, cloth bibs and burp cloths will work just fine. I suggest having at least one extra bib and two burp cloths in your bag.

Blanket

Depending on the season, you may need a plush blanket or a muslin blanket.

Pacifier

Pacifiers are all about your baby’s preference, EJ only likes the Philips Avent Soothie. Keep at least one extra pacifier in the diaper bag.

Healthcare Kit

The First Years American Red Cross Baby Healthcare Kit is a simple, inexpensive kit that includes a thermometer, nasal aspirator, medicine dropper, nail clipper, digital thermometer, medicine spoon, and comb.

Travel Size Items

Here’s my list of travel size items to keep in the diaper bag.

· Diaper Rash Cream-Boudreaux’s Butt Paste

· Lotion or Balm- Aveeno Nighttime Balm

Medicine

Always consult with your baby’s Pediatrician whenever administering medicine. Doctor appointments would be a good time to discuss meds.

· Little Remedies Infant Acetaminophen

· *Children’s Benadryl

· Mommy’s Bliss Gripe Water

· *Mommy’s Bliss Soothing Gel

Toy

You need at least one good toy for entertainment…trust me! The Infantino Wrist Rattles were an EJ favorite.

Hand Sanitizer

I use my Babyganics alcohol-free foaming hand sanitizer when I do not have access to wash my hands.

Diaper Bag Dispenser

The Munchkin diaper bag dispenser stays clipped on the handle of the diaper bag for easy access.

With everything that I have listed, you need a good diaper bag. We have the Eddie Bauer Legend Back Pack Diaper Bag and a generic back pack diaper bag that I purchased specifically for daycare. The Eddie Bauer diaper bag is very spacious and sturdy. The back pack diaper bags just make sense, because it frees up your hands. I hope this will be helpful in making sure your diaper bag has everything that it needs inside. I'll be back tomorrow!
