Why I Chose To Breastfeed
Updated: Feb 26
By profession I'm a Registered Dietitian. So, I'm aware of the benefits of breastfeeding both for mother and baby. However, what really seemed to root my desire to breastfeed was the decision of my mother back in the early 90s. Years ago, my mom and I were having a conversation about me as a baby and the topic of breastfeeding came up. I was so amazed about the fact that my mom made the decision to breastfeed, because breastfeeding during that time was rare, especially among African American women.
At that moment, I made the decision that I was going to breastfeed, because I felt like if my mother could do it at a time when resources and information was so limited. Then, I too could commit to the breastfeeding journey. It was such a blessing to have my mom attend a breastfeeding class with me during my pregnancy. Of course information, products, and technology have changed over the years, but I could tell that she was just as excited as I was.
On December 2nd, 2019, I began my breastfeeding journey and I wouldn't change it for the world. In the forth coming weeks, I'll be sharing more of my breastfeeding journey. Until then, be well.
